These lovely little cases were used to keep matches in, to keep them dry and to have them to hand when they were needed. Nowadays they can can make gorgeous little keepsakes or be worn as an unusual pendant.

This one dates back to 1913 when it was hallmarked in Birmingham by William Hair Haseler.  1913, the year that unemployment and maternity benefits were introduced, Emmeline Pankhurst was sentenced to three years of penal servitude and Emily Davison, another suffragette, ran out in front of the King's horse at the Derby and died days later.

Treasured by someone for many years, this vesta has a stylish striped design and would be a lovely gift as an unusual birthday present, a silver anniversary present or a gift for someone with an interest in history.

It measures 4.9 cm tall, is 4.3 cm at it's widest point and 1 cm deep. It has a very ornate 'R' engraved on the cartouche and is in lovely condition for something over 100 hundred years old.
