These lovely little cases were used to keep matches in, to keep them dry and to have them to hand when they were needed. They began to be made after the invention of friction matches, or vestas, around the 1830-40s. Nowadays they can be worn as an unusual locket pendant or can make exquisite and historic keepsakes.

Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1901 by Minshall & Latimer of Vyse Street in the city's historic Jewellery Quarter, this vesta case is a  particularly fine example of the artistry and skill of the Victorian/Edwardian era. Crafted from sterling silver it has intricate foliate engraving on front and back, and very decorative initials engraved on one side. It would make an elegant addition to anyone's collection, perfect for an antique silver or jewellery collector, or for people interested in social history and the history of design and manufacture.

It measures 4.8 cm tall, is 3.5 cm wide and 1 cm deep and has a large silver ring at the top to act as a bale, and a serrated strike plae on the base. It weighs 28.5g.
