These lovely little cases were used to keep matches in, to keep them dry and to have them to hand when they were needed. They began to be made after the invention of friction matches, or vestas, around the 1830-40s. Nowadays they can be worn as an unusual locket pendant or can make exquisite and historic keepsakes.
Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1901 by Minshall & Latimer of Vyse Street in the city's historic Jewellery Quarter, this vesta case is a particularly fine example of the artistry and skill of the Victorian/Edwardian era.
