A majestic pendant featuring a beautiful blue Ruskin Pottery roundel set into a classic sterling silver surround.
Ruskin Pottery was founded in Smethwick in 1898 by the then head of both Lincoln And Birmingham Schools of Art, who named the company after John Ruskin . Ruskin had influenced designers of the Arts & Crafts movement with his philosophy of connections between art, nature and society. The Ruskin studio was run by the founder's son, William Howson Taylor, who delighted in experimenting with innovative glazes to produce a range of work including vases, plaques, buttons and jewellery. The business was closed in 1935, and at that point Howson destroyed all records of the glaze recipes and techniques.
The piece of Ruskin set into this pendant bears the impressed "Ruskin" mark on the reverse; it is a vibrant rich blue with the depths of a midnight sky, The ceramic was made c. 1930, the sterling silver setting is new, and was made in Birmingham.
The pendant measures 4.6 cm long including the bale, and 2.9 cm wide. It is presented on a new Spiga chain which can be worn at either 41 cm or 46 cm (16/18 inches)
A thoughtful gift for anyone who admires the Arts and Craft Movement, and who loves to have a connection to the history of craft in the Midlands.
