These lovely little cases were used to keep matches in, to keep them dry and to have them to hand when they were needed. They began to be made after the invention of friction matches, or vestas, around the 1830-40s. Nowadays they can make gorgeous little keepsakes.

Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1888 by Colen Hewer Cheshire who worked in  Northampton Street in the city's historic Jewellery Quarter, this vesta case is an exquisite example of the artistry and skill of the Victorian era. Crafted from sterling silver it has intricate foliate engraving on front and back with a shield shaped cartouche on the front which is engraved with initials.  It would make an elegant addition to anyone's collection, perfect for an antique silver or jewellery collector, or for people interested in social history and the history of design and manufacture.

it is in good condition, with just a tiny dent on one edge, treasured by someone for many years. The hallmark is clear and well-preserved. A charming keepsake for an unusual birthday present, or as a gift to celebrate a silver wedding anniversary .

It measures 5.1 cm tall, is 4 cm wide and 1 cm deep.  It weighs 28.9g.
