Our 'treasure hunter' has been out and about recently searching for lovely pieces of vintage silver to add to our depleting collection.
Some of his finds were a fine selection of vintage and antique silver napkin rings.

We were having fun imagining what history these interesting objects had, how many tables, in how many houses had they been used in? How many family dinners had they witnessed?

The current form of napkin rings originate from France in the 19th century - as well as for table decoration they were used to identify which napkin belonged to who between laundry days.
Silver napkin rings became popular as sterling silver was all the rage at the time. The fashion soon spread through Europe and to America.

Today antique napkin rings have become very popular as Wedding, Anniversary and Christening gifts, either as pairs

or single ones

Occasionally it's possible to find something a little unusual such as this one with a Bakelite lining

or in an original display case.
